That is impossible to determine due to the very personal nature of the situation. Most advise a combination of techniques. A support group of some type is a must. Doctor's can prescribe a medicine that makes the body sick around alcohol. That is not advised if the addiction is too severe. If a person suffers from severe withdrawal or some type of toxic shock, cold turkey is a very bad idea. In those cases a doctor must monitor and advise the person seeking treatment. In less severe cases, cold turkey is better with a support group. In any case, it is a must to have outside support. The exception might be if you are ignorant regarding the production of alcohol and are stranded on a desert island. You have to be ignorant or you'll just make it on the island.
Good luck. By the way, if you are on such an island congratulations on getting the Internet up. Just kidding. Again, good luck.

There are a number of ways of treating alcoholics. I don't know the reasons why the person you are talking about is an alcoholic so I can not say for sure which is the best way.

All methods will require detoxification to one degree or another.

I myself went cold turkey. It was fortunate that at that time I was moving so I was able to break from my drinking buddies. So long as the alcoholism hasn't reached the chemical addiction stage this method is not as hard as it might seem. The main thing to remember is that you will need to change friends and routines. Get away from the place where you feel the need to drink. Find some Friends who are non drinkers. You will need to be dry for at least one year or more before you put yourself back into the situation where you are used to drinking.

I hear from other people that the AA 12 step program is a very good method.

There is aversion therapy. this quite often uses drugs which either make you vomit or makes the taste of alcohol vile. This method works very well with counseling on those who have become chemically dependant on alcohol.

Counseling is another route

I now use a method developed at the university of Sydney Australia. It allows me to set what is to me an acceptable amount to drink. I can now have one glass of wine with a meal. If I am out I can have one top shelf as well. I started on this after being dry for 14yrs.I have found that this works well for me and have heard from others that it takes a little self control at first but once you get the idea it is easy. You make the choices of where the limits are they are not put on you. the above limits are my own personal ones.

Good luck

OK, we did an intervention with a specialist. There are three meeting with the family, first two with the specialist and family only and the third with the person who has the substance abuse problem. That is when they are confronted by the family and specialist and are put into treatment. Very effective. In our case this person was sent to St. Helena in Nappa Valley California. You may want to look them up for more information. Now it has been two years the this person has not touched one drop of alcohol. We never thought we would see this person doing so well! To go from one extreme to the next was life changing. Good luck to you and check out that hospital.

Depends on how bad the person drinks. It may take medical treatment. If it doesn't AA is a good program but you have to work hard take the 12 steps seriously and change your play mates and play grounds.

AA has been around a long time and because it is annoymous, there are no figures released about success. However, it's safe to assume, given how many go through the program and sing its praises, they have a pretty good reputation. Whatever it is, the drunk has gotta want it and be pretty darn near the bottom. When they aren't ready, or don't have their whole heart in it, I don't think anything will help them.

What ever makes them see and be responsible for their drinking. Make being sober better than being numb. What ever makes them put their life and others more important than the first drink.
