He was voted Time Magazine man of the century and many people quote him in order to bolster their arguments usually completely out of context. Scientists do not usually have to resort to appeals to authority in this way, relativity and evolution remain true whether or not a particular person first 'discovered' them.

Because people are terrified of science talk, especially physics. Physics is deemed as the quintessential "smart person's" subject and people have such low self-esteem that they don't want to go near it out of fear of looking dumb.
