You may want to try a moist heat pad. The good thing about those is that it is both warm and moist so it will not make your legs more dry and more ichy. Also these heat pads transfer heat more deep into the issue. It will improve your blood circulation and help you relax.

Is your legs sore every night or is it from an activity? If you have sore legs every night and if the pain is relieved by rest- you should go to the doctor and get checked for venous insuffeciency. If your pain is for achy muscles from activity, use a heating pad. The heat will stimulate blood flow to remove the lactic acid buildup that is causing you pain. The heat is also soothing to help you sleep. Feel better!

Cold packs feel good, but it could lead you to very bad phlebitis (That would be veins inflammation). Heating pads could give you varices.

If the pain is in your calves, the best thing is to shower your feet with a normal temperature mobile shower for 20 minutes. It helps me so much.
if the pain is higher than your knees, this method doesn't help 100%, then you should treat your back and hips by managing them and doing special stretchings every day.

I've tried both and for me it's a warm heating pad, and a pillow between the calves. Ibuprofen if not allergic or sensitive to it, or Darvocet is good [prescription only]. Best wishes, I've been there.

Try sitting in a tub of hot water (the hottest that you can tolerate) and let the water relax your muscles in your legs. Also speak to your doctor, he may have something that he can prescribe to help you. As your spouse/partner to rub you legs for you, this would help relax you muscles.
I have RLS (restless leg syndrom) and until I went to my doctor I went for 4 days w/out sleep, because my legs ached and I couldnt keep them still at night, and if/when I did fall asleep it would wake me up out of a dead sleep and keep me up the rest of the night.

It really depends on whats causing the pain. I take Ibuprophen (Advil). Cures the pain and any inflammation.
