Base set should also have speakerphone and ability to dial from it even if the handset is misplaced. It should be able to display caller ID (even better if it announces the caller). I got one from Radio Shack but returned it because it was tinny in the sound department. My house WiFi is 2.4 GHz but I found no interference in either direction. The system should be expandable to add 2 or 3 more handsets. I think digital is supposed to be better than analog for security reasons but analog has better voice quality, according to Consumer Report. I can also see where a headset jack would come in handy. I have no idea if 2.4 or 5.8 or 1.9 GHZ is best. (I have not seen the 1.9 GHz/DECT units in any store yet.) SO, HAS ANYONE BOUGHT A RECENT MODEL WITH MY SPECS AND BEEN HAPPY WITH THE PRODUCT?

There is a lot to consider but if there is a power failure, no modern cordless phone will work full stop. You must have an old plug-in phone as a back up. Now the fun part. Phones come from 1.9 gigahertz thru to the new DECT 6.0 gigahertz I brought a 6 GHz phone and it would not work from one end of the house to the other. You see the higher the GHz the less penetration thro walls so I returned it and brought a 2.8 GHz and that works great. There can be interferences with some video senders or cheaper WiFi setups but if so just return the phone and exchange it for one that works for you (consumer guarantees act says it must do the job you brought it to do or a refund /exchange must be offered) My phone came with four handsets and answer phone built in. Good luck

Panasonic 5.8GHz with talking caller ID. I bought it less than a year ago, (base and 2 handsets) and I am extremely pleased with it.

In addition to all of the basics:

The screen is color and you can upload your own pics and ringtones.

You can select specific ringtones for certain telephone numbers.

Talking Caller ID

You can add up to 8 handsets.

When I did use the answering machine (before I got voice mail), you could listen to your messages through the handset.

Just to say that with the 5.8 MHz or the 1.9 GHz you are able to be further away from the base phone. I bought mine at Sam's but then gave it away as I cancelled house phone and internet service and use my cell phone now. I never had problems with the 5.8 I had bought. Sorry forgot the model, but google Sams, they sell good cheaper stuff there at times.
