I have a 9 yr old son that seems to be having some self-control issues (huffing/puffing), anger management, etc., at school/ home. If things do not go his way, he back talks whoever & whatever may be in the same room at that time. He makes wonderful grades (honor roll all this year)! He just can't seem to grasp that he is NOT boss & I don't know where to turn to at this point, to get the proper help for him.
He is not the only child, however, his sister is 20 yrs old, who is married w/ a baby, who does not live in our home. But you would think he was the only child. There are no children for him to play with in our neighborhood & he is sooo dependent on me & his dad to entertain him. That is not possible, due to his dad working long hours & me being disabled. He doesn't pick up after himself like he should, & he can really make a mess w/ his stuff!!!

He had open heart surgery when he was 3 yrs old & I think we have literally spoiled our son rotten not realizing the dangers ahead.

Call 211 from any phone. That's the number for First Call For Help. You can ask them for the numbers to free or inexpensive family services. Maybe you could get him into some activities at your local YMCA. They offer activities after school and weekends, transportation (limited), and their fees are based on your income (my children go for free! and love it). What about boyscouts, or the Big Brother program. Speak to your disability case worker, or son's school counselor for other options. Try to be patient. Didn't you know it all as a child?! lol

It sounds like he does need something outside of school and home to help him manage himself. How about volunteer him at the local charity or library and let him help out the others.

This way he will feel useful (appeals to the smart person he already is), occupied (leaves you free time) and work out the physical energy that causing him to use negative means to get attention.

People at the charity will like his helping out and will respond positively and gradually he will change, because he sees the positive traits that others see in him. He can assert himself in a positive manner.

About the mess, limit the mess to his room not the entire house.
Let him have his world however he likes. That way the rest of the house is presentable for adults, he gets his say and you don't have to be frustrated and chip away the relationship by having to constantly remind him of the mess.

A technique to combat anger that's worth trying when he does feel up to it. When he feels loved deeply inside, the anger will slowly go away.

(BTW, "Metta" means an altruistic attitude of love and friendliness)

Hope this alternative helps.
