Why do mucles, arms for instance, only grow so large? Wouldn't it stand to reason that if you continue to train, increasing weight lifted each time, your arms would continue to grow?

Because every body (not everybody- but each body) has a genetic potential. A horse jockey is not going to have as big of arms as a defensive lineman for the San Diego Chargers, period. No, it doesn't stand to reason.

When we build muslce, we are not actually adding more fibers of muscles...we only increase the connective tissue between the fibers that allows for a stronger contraction. There appears to be a physiological limit as to how much connective tissue we can build and this is what limits our muscles ability to "grow." If we actually could significantly increase the number of muscle fibers we have, I suppose we would continue to gain muscle bulk...unfortunately, we actually loose muscle fibers from the day we are born.

A great question! It might have something to do with the fact that the heart can only pump a certain amount of blood around its body.

if you go to the gym and work out too much your muscles will not grow because you need to let them recover. If you go to the gym like 4 times a week then you should take 2 weeks off THEN they will grow larger. That is one of the biggest things about lifting, letting them repair themselves, so then they can grow.
