Vista is an operating system not a program per say. Most likly you can install the same version of all your software on Vista that you have currently so you won't have any issues sending files to people.
I currently have Vista (there are some perks to working for a company with bulk licensing, we get new stuff months before the general public) and I've been using it for a while now. It's got some querks and a learning curve. A lot of things are in differnet places, and take some getting used to to find them.
If you will be using Windows XP at schol, I'd recommend sticking with Windows XP at home so that you only have OS to remember how to use.

two letters:NO
1. WAY TOO BIG MEMORY REQUIREMENTS: 15 gb of hard drive space? give me a break
2. NO REAL INNOVATION: you can't just add support for things that other more advanced operating systems like GNU/Linux and Mac OS X have. These include the deskbar and such
3.THE GRAPHICS REQUIREMENTS: not only do the fancy graphics bloat the windows kernel, it also requires too much horsepower. This is the obvious place where linux excels. I mean the GUI isn't even part of Linux.
4.IT'S FROM MICROSOFT: yes this is a big deal. There are billions of already existing standards. Most notably the HTML/CSS standards and the ODF standards both of which Microsoft has either fully disregarded or not implemented to the best they can. Microsoft just forces others to use whatever they want. Plus, Microsoft is avidly against open-source and free software. The Microsoft-Novell deal does NOT justify Microsoft's stance on FOSS.

I played around with the beta version from microsoft and at least 2 programs that I was using with XP would not work. McAfee 8.0 would crash it and you had to do a system recovery to get Vista back running. With custom software, there is a chance it ain't gonna work. But think of Windows Vista as a 500 pound gorilla running your way. Either you run with it, or you gonna get trampled by it. I suggest wait a coupla years till the bugs are worked out and the hardware & software is compliant.

Not sure what you're asking. If you plan on installing Vista on your current pc first make sure that it is capable of handling it. Microsoft has a special tool to help you decide of your pc can handle Vista: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/upgradeadvisor/default.mspx
Some programs clearly will not be ready for Vista when it first arrives, even some major companies will not be ready, just heard to today that HP does not have any Vista drivers for its scanners, or something like that.

Vista is mainly Microsoft version of the design and art style of the mac with things similiar to it. Vista is mostly to say you have it, it doensn't require to have it for anything. It is mainly just a look and feel thing. If you want it, I say go for it, i am already planning to buy it. Operating procedures will not change, it mostly just a makeover of the pc.
