I guess because of stress, or depression.
For whatever reason they start I think it is really stupid.

People usually start smoking when they're young. They're experimenting or maybe hanging out with others who smoke, so they join in. They hear all the information about addiction and health problems, but young people aren't mature enough to really evaluate risks properly. They think they're invincible and that they can handle anything. They think they can quit whenever they want and that nothing bad will ever happen to them. Then they become addicted and they can't stop. It's a really bad habit and people need lots of support in order to quit. It's not easy at all.

Because we are very stupid people that thought it was cool and now we are addicted to the numerous chemicals that they put in a cigarette. My six year old asks me all the time...Mommy why do you smoke? I tell her because I am stupid! plain and simple, the government has got us hooked so we can pay their sin tax, if they really wanted people to quit smoking then insurance companies would pay for the aid to stop smoking. I hope you are smart enough to never start.

usually it starts in the teens & then you get addicted. I smoked for about 25 years - thank God i quit

Because people believe that it calms their nerves, but they dont know that smoking causes lung cancer, and when u start smoking, its hard to stop

There are many reasons, too many to list. I think it depends on each person and why they think they need to start smoking. Often times it could be peer pressure from classmates, watching your parents do it, think it will relieve stress, curiousity...

I think most start because it is cool, sophisticatded, adult like. However smoking is also addictivive and becomes habit forming.

because they think they are mature and doing what most of the "cool" teens do thats why but for me its really stupid and crazy
