I woke up with the flu yesterday morning and my temp has bounced from, 96 to 103. I keep taking tylenol and ibuprofen. They help somewhat but the fever comes right back. I'M MISERABLE. I'm 62 and a single grndpa who lives alone. No family or friends nearby. Anyone out there have any ideas? I feel like crawling in a hole. I never had this experience before with the Flu; i.e., not being able to lower the fever. Thanks, I'll stay up watching for answers. I can't sleeo anyway.

Believe it or not 103 isn't that bad, baseline is 98.6 but that is really general, with the flu virus still lingering around the 103 is within normal limits. Stay dressed normally, DO NOT PUT ON LAYERS OF CLOTHES IN AN ATTEMPT TO "SWEAT IT OUT", this is a common misconception among lay people. Sip plenty of liquids if you can tolerate them and lay off the tylenol it is really hard on the liver and if you aren't in pain don't worry. You just have to let the flu run its course. Your fever will break soon, if it doesn't see a doctor.

Oh! I feel so bad for you! There is not much you can do to lower your fever other than tylenol. THe fever is a natural response for your body to deal with an infection. Believe it or not-it is a good thing. Make yourself a soothing cup of hot tea with honey and lemon and lay down. Try and sleep through the fever. I hope you get well soon! Take care.

You should see a Doctor and you can go to the local Health Dept if you get worse. Tylenol and IB Proferien dont always work go to the older methods a luke warm bath with a little alchol in it and just soak and if you have regular asprin take two of them at your age your no risk for Rye Syndrome if you go above 103 call a ambulance or seek medical attention you could have a seizure at that point.

I'm sorry you feel so awful & there's no one around to help. First, stop taking the tylenol--it really hurts the liver, then tonight I'd force liquids and try to get some sleep. If you don't feel better by tomorrow, please call a doctor or the hospital near you for further advice on what to do, you are at an age where the flu can be a real bad thing. ***Hold on there & you'll get better.

You should see your doctor......there is flu medicines now that will help lesson your case of it.....also try motrin some instead of the tylenol but be sure you drink plenty of liquids with that much fever and taking the motrin.....use the tylenol if the fever is lower and if way up try the motrin at the next dose time...
Hope this helps.....but really see the doctor and ask him about the medicine for the flu

Don't be concerned with "Breaking" the fever. The fever is your Friend and is required by your body to fight infection. Take over the counter meds for temporary relief, eat nutritious foods, drink PLENTY of water and rest. In time, the fever will break. If you follow the suggestions, it'll help break a bit sooner.

Take 1 Tablespoon of epsom salts to 8 oz of warmish water twice a day. Yes, it tastes rather bitterish. A tiny milk to wash your mouth out, helps. (Milk is not good for the flu, so don't drink it.) It is pure magnesium and will flush the flu out of your system. Next time you start to get the flu, you only need to do this once, and it will kick it. It really works for me and mine. Fever is your body's way of burning out what it needs to, be it Viruses, infection, etc.
