If I were to give some catnip to my cats every day would that be safe?

OK I have two opposite answers now. I thought maybe I could get my cats to not eat so much by distracting them with catnip. It redirects them to something else. They just seem to want to eat all of the time.

Hi Michelle...catnip is fine and safe for cats anytime everyday. Many cats like to nibble at catnip. It is perfectly safe -- most cats don't eat much of it anyway. Interesting fact: while cats enjoy eating catnip, ingestion does not cause the typical reaction. Catnip's aroma must be inhaled and reach sensitive nasal receptors to reach the cat's brain to cause a reaction.

Generally, cats who are free fed will nibble all day long which later can contribute to feline obesity and associated health problems such as diabetes. Consider switching your cats to a scheduled feeding (e.g. morning and night) so that you will be aware of the amount of servings they are consuming.

Catnip is like marijuana, but for cats. Therefore your cats minds and actions will be altered. Catnip itself, is totally safe for your cats. However, their reaction to it might not be. Haha. Try one more time later in the day. Make sure you give them a pinch full of it, in two separate spots so they don't fight over it. Just know when cats are actually fighting, thir fur starts flying around. If they weren't hissing at each other, then they were probably playing with each other since it can make them playful! Catnip is actually from the MINT family, believe it or not. It is totally safe, you can give it to them every day, but it's also a special treat for cats. They react differently to catnip...some go nuts over it. Others just kind of are interested.
It's safe, but try not to give it every day because you don;t want your cat to develop immunity to it. It should enjoy it, so try and ration the catnip as a treat!

Catnip is certainly safe but I would imagine, like anything else, giving it every might day would make it lose it's effectiveness for what you want it for. There's no health reason for you not to do it. My cats want to eat all of the time too. If you're not free feeding your cats (not recommended if your cats tend towards fat) then they always think they're hungry. If they act hungry enough, maybe they can fool you into feeding them twice ;-)))))

My cats love catnip. I have to keep it in the fridge or they would be all over it. Of course it was a little hard to explain to Mom that the plastic baggie in the fridge really was catnip.

I give my cat catnip all of the time and she's fine. Catnip is naturally grown so i can't see it being unsafe for cats.

It's fine as long as you're not letting them literally EAT the catnip. If you don't have a ball or something to put it in you can take an old sock and put it in there (tie the sock near the top).

No don't give catnip everyday to your cats.......just give to em once inwhile.....catnip for them is like smoking weed for us. So don't give em catnip too much........it is funny to watch em act nuts ha ha.

I don't know if it's safe for everyday use, but I give it to my cats from time to time. They love it, some eat it, some sniff it and some just roll around in it! But I use it for special treats. they may just get bored with it if you give it everyday.
