It may be normal for a parent to recognize it if her baby isn't a pretty baby, but it is not normal to essentially be ashamed of her.
Before my children were born I imagined what I would do if they weren't pretty, and I thought about how I'd do what I could to make the most of their appearance - that's all you can do. I came around to realizing that I'd be ok with it if my babies didn't happen to be beautiful. I would try, though, to help them make the most of their appearance as they grew (if it didn't improve).
It turned out my babies were incredibly beautiful, and I always kind of wondered if that was the universe's way of rewarding me for being ready for an unattractive baby when they were on the way.
In fairness to your sister, maybe she just wanted to hold off on handing out pictures until the baby got a little more good looking and the pictures "out there" would be pictures her child would be ok with having "out there" later on in her life.

This is news to me. I've never known a mother to say such a thing about their baby. I thought parents were all fairly partial when it came to their own children. So I would have to say it isn't normal. Your sister may be experiencing postpartum depression. She should discuss this with a doctor.
Honesty??? Her 'honesty' could really hurt her little girl's self esteem in years to come.

many babies are ugly. I've had 4 children and not all were pretty for sure. I would never say it and there are photos of all of them. The funniest thing is the least pretty one is now by far the prettiest and vice versa. But yes I know a lot of people who are honest about there babies. And I know people who have a problem bonding with their babies and would be the ones to say it.

My baby's newborn picture looked kind of weird even he said he thought he looked like an alien baby. But he grew up to be beautiful. So give it some time. What do you think, is the baby really that ugly?

Its not usual, but if she loves and cares for the baby it might just be that she is being totally honest. Lots of people think babies are cute lots of others think they look like Winston Churchill. If your sister is the type who prides herself on excessive honesty she may be in the Winston Churchill school of infant comparisons.

I'm pretty sure she wouldn't tell her child that she's ugly. I don't know why everyone is tripping because I'm pretty sure that some point in time, you ran across an ugly baby. MO- all babies are not cute.

i think so. when i was pregnant with my child i hoped she wouldn't be born ugly, and if she was ,i hoped for the good sense to know it!!! i didn't want to be that oblivious mother insisting you look at pics of their ugly little troll babys. however, if my baby was ugly my mother's heart didn't know any better. i thought she was beautiful!

All parents think their kids are beautiful regardless. Does your sister love her child, or the father's child? Maybe there is an unspoken reason behind it.
