I need to be able to record conversations between bill collectors and myself. I've had problems with one collector that in the past has said very bad things to me. I need to have proof of these harassing calls.

radio shack sells some devices for this:

There are laws governing recording of phone conversations. Check your local phone book.w

If you are being harassed...notify your local Police or Sheriff's department. They can place a trace on your line and provide you with a way to log the calls.

You may also want to contact an attorney as you can file suit against collection agencies / creditors that act that way. A respectable attorney will be willing to take the case without a retainer as they will receive their payment as part of whatever award you might win.

Recording of conversations are legal only if all parties know it and agree to it. Any unknown recordings will not be used in any court. Radio Shack has two devices, one is a recorder that connects in line with the handset, answer the phone, push record and you are set. 79 ish dollars The other is a recorder that automatically does it all. Does not even have to be plugged into the same jack as a phone. Adjustable on/off roger beep. 99 dollars. You have to announce they are being recorded, if they stay on the line prima facie evidence they agree.

If someone were so inclined as to record thier converstations with unknowing persons (which is illegal) they could purchase a device from Radioshack specifically designed for this. You plug a phoneline into it and just hit the button when you want to record. It runs about 50 bucks. Otherwise, I would just get a cheap microphone and hook it up to my computer. Use the windows analog recording program and hold it to the handset.

I don't really understand what you are trying to say. Do you want to keep a record of the numbers you've called or do you want to record the outgoing phone messages. If you want to record the outgoing phone numbers, I suggest you get Skype and make all your phone calls on the internet. It keeps a record of every call you make and how much it costs.
