Congratulations on wanting to dump ME.
And if your computer is new enough to come installed with ME, it should work with XP with little difficulty.
There was one individual that said to hold off until Vista is available. I dunno... Despite what microsoft says, I've seen systems with minimal requirements for an OS actually running that OS, and it ain't a pretty sight. They are slower than hell, crash frequently, and are just a pain.
With Vista they have two ranges. One they call Vista compatible with is the absolute minimum, and something called "Vista Premium Ready," which is really the realistic minimum requirements where all the features will work properly, and more importantly, it will run stable.
And even this doesn't make a lot of sense. They talk about a 1.5ghz chip with 1gig RAM. How many boards out there that run a 1.5ghz chip will also handle 1gig of RAM?
Stick with XP home edition. It will be more stable on your system, and it will be less expensive...
And this brings us to the next subject. I've heard stories about key codes, but I've never seen it work. This ain't like '98 or ME. My suggestion, if you want a fully functioning version of XP, that will work longer than 30 days and remain functional, buy it.
Because of the license agreement between Microsoft and their vendors, you can only buy a copy of XP if you are a system builder. All this means is that along with XP, you have to buy some sort of piece of hardware.
I was building a computer at the time, and when I purchased my copy of XP, I also purchased a power supply. There are some retailers that will help you with this little problem, it's not a big deal.
Then once you have your copy of XP, there are tons of websites about how to reformat with XP. It's actually pretty easy, as you don't use dos prompts any longer. You just boot up the system with the XP disk in the CD-ROM, and follow the instructions.
But obviously, you want to make back up all your files, write down the email addresses you want to keep, and as I say, don't forget to make a copy of your favourites, and you'll be fine!
Good luck!

Oh yes, you can. If you run the Windows XP cd it will instruct you on the way. Actually you have to insert the aforesaid cd, cancel out the automatic procedure that begins, and then reboot (restart) your computer. While rebooting, you'll see a blinking message "Press any key..." . Press any key (press the Enter key) and wait for the instructions. Follow them as they come and your installation will be complete.
However, remember to keep a back-up first of all your important documents and keep the installation cds of all your applications and hardware near you when installing. If you still don't feel comfortable, get it installed by someone who knows about the Windows XP O.S.

You can upgrade a computer from ME to XP for sure cause Ive done that. Im pretty sure you will be able to upgrade from ME to Vista once it comes out. You have to buy the upgrade at a store. Should cost about $100 to $250 depending on what you get.
You also need to check with your school if it's not your computer. Buying the upgrade would be a waste if they don't let you do it.

Don't upgrade your computer to Vista. They recommend buying a new computer with Vista preinstalled.
I'd recommend buying Windows XP home edition. It's very easy to install. Just put the discs in and they install themselves. It will cost you between $75-100. Make sure that your computer meets the minimum requirements on the Windows XP box, though.
