I'm 18 and still afraid of the dark. I sleep with the lights on. I live by myself and sometimes I can start off in the dark but I always end up turning the lights on. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm 41 and have to have a t.v. on to sleep! I used to sleep in the dark untill I got with my husband 20 years ago. We have always lived out in the boonies in big old houses. And he works third shift. Always has. And that's just to creepy at night by yourself. You hear every little creak and noise there is. I got so used to it even after I had kids, I still have to. I don't like to hear all the noises and lay there and wonder what they are. I have it on nick at nite, I'v seen all the shows, so I don't have to see them to know what is going on. And that will put me right to sleep. Now if I try another channel, and don't know the show, I'll keep taking peeks to see what is going on and stay up too late doing that. So, big deal if you need light. That's just the way you are.

Oh I'm 22 and hate the dark...but I'm married now. It is true...a presence that you are familiar with helps tremendously...Dogs are great! Or if you prefer get a cat :) If you don't want all the lights on get a cool grown up night light...there is nothing wrong with confronting this fear and realizing the answer is still light!
Take care sweetie!

Check out all areas of where you live every night before you go to bed (unless you live in a large mansion). Leave a few low intensity night lights on... I always do. Works for me and I am 62. I am not afraid of the dark .. it just disorients me. Good luck.

Try getting a pet. sometimes the company is enough to make you feel better about staying alone.
I use to have to stay alone for 2 weeks at a time as a kid and teenager. and I hate night time nosies. but I had a cat and a dog in the house and the cat always slept with me and the dog would bark at anything that was in the house so I know that I was safe. ^_^ (At least i felt safe and the night never bothered me.)

Have soft music playing! Keep telling yourself, 'darkness is not real: it's just absence of light!'! Keep humming some nice tunes yourself! All this plus good reading habits will pick you up! You also need good friends!
