I am a Christian and although I do enjoy worship songs at my church, I almost exclusively listen to classic rock & roll and oldies tunes at home and in my car. I feel that listening to secular music as a hobby ultimately does not interfere with your salvation. Do you feel that you can be a true Christian and prefer songs that do not have overtly Christian messages?

I love God and I listen to all kinds of rock, if its o.k. or not that's a tuff one. The Bible says flee from the appearance of evil. Does it appear evil? Remember also God sees the heart of a man, what is in your heart?

There is no such thing as "Christian music" or "secular music". Many early hymns of the reformation were taken from the tunes of drinking songs. One of the most beautiful old hymns was taken from the tune of a song in praise of a prostitute.
It's the words that matter. And if the words are not harmful, go for it. Do you feel bad about reading a novel? Or an encyclopedia? Those are "secular". But quite legit. The same with music.
Jesus didn't come to restrict our music. He came that we might have life, and have it more abundantly.

I believe that all music should be praise or worship music. I used to listen to worldly music when I was in the world, but now I listen to Christian, Classical, Jazz, Soul, Celtic and not any secular pop, rock, rap, or country. You have to use your own judgment on this one I think. For instance I love the sound of Eva Cassidy, and she does have some really good soul stuff, but she does have some not so good stuff too so I skip over most of that. But I also believe that what kind of music you listen to is a determining factor to your maturity in Christ. Most of the mature Christians I know have forsaken all secular music. 1 Cor. 13:11

Read in a "Church Sound" Magazine awhile back that music was split into secular and religious only recently. Before that music was just music, and I think we need to get back to that.

I also read a document from the late 1800s on the Web about a denomination that looks at music as a waste of time, where we should be concerned about the things of God, not becoming lost in our own pleasures.

I'll go with the first one.

I don't think secular music would keep you from Heaven, but I don't think God probably approves of a lot of secular music. I'm sure the angels aren't singing rap songs with the cussing in it and stuff up there. I listen to secular music myself and I know some of it is bad but I just enjoy it while I'm here because I'm sure it won't be any in Heaven!

Im a Christian and I like secular music too, Ive been a big fan of Pink Floyd most of my life. I dont think music is any better or worse than conversations... all songs are, are stories or conversations put to music. If its a bad story or bad convo, you wont like it... but if its something that interests or inspires you it will. God didnt say we couldnt enjoy things in this life, just dont put anything before Him.

I feel the same exact way. I love classic rock but I love the lord much more. I'm sure you feel the same way and as long as we feel this way then it's fine. You can also think of it this way, back then music had meaning, not like the music these days. People wrote about things like stopping the war and keeping the peace, the words came from the heart. Now doesn't God teach us that we must remain peaceful towards one another? Personally I feel that it's fine as long as you put the Lord first.

God made all things to be enjoyed. I feel that as long as we don't put anything above Him, including music, we are alright. As long as the music doesn't express an idea or morally downgrade another of Gods creation it seem like it would be alright. I listen to smooth jazz because most of the songs don't have words and it allows my mind to imagine beauty.

It honestly depends on what kind of christian you talk to and how you interpret the bible. But i dont think that listening to secular music is really wrong. But its just the fact that your not idolizing this music or songwriters that all.
may God bless you and everyone you love!

Your every word and deed does not have to be about Jesus when we're Christian. I made that mistake when I first became a Christian. It's called being legalistic. I would only listen to Christian music and only let my kids watch Christian tv, etc..... but God showed me that as long as our hearts are centered on him that all things are clean to us. (Innocent things I mean, as long as the song isn't about sex or doesn't have swearing in it)
