It's going to be okay. The ENT's know what they're doing and the pediatric nurses are the sweetest on Earth. They will take very good care of your son and do their best to keep him as comfortable as possible.
If the hospital has a chapel you might want to pray, and if there is a priest you may ask for a visit before or after your sons surgery.
I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers, also. Your son will do just fine and you will, too. You are stronger than you know!

I am a registered nurse that used to work in the recovery room of a surgery center that did tonsillectomies on a regular basis. The kids usually recover very well. His age group usually does just fine! Be assured that generally, a child receives a lot more attention post-op that an adult does!!! The main thing is to remain calm before the surgery because your child will pick up on your emotions. Try not to cry or be fearful in front of them. It is okay to cry once they go to the OR suite!!! It will be tough for you, too! If the child is very afraid to be taken back by the staff they MAY offer to let you accompany them. And, sometimes if in recovery the child is tearful and wants the parents we would allow it, but only in extreme circumstances!! You can always ask about those things when you arrive for the surgery. Good luck!

This is normal and it will be easier for him than it will be for you.
You need to calm down for his sake. He will get nervous/sacred if he feels you getting that way. At this age, a tonsillectomy is a quick and easy procedure. He will barely remember it several months from now. I went through something like this when my daughter had to go in and have tubes put in her ears.
Here is what I was told: 1) Be calm 2) Relax 3) Don't let your emotions get the best of you infront of your child prior to surgery 4) Breathe deeply 5) Do not look at the clock when your child is in the OR. The saying "A watched pot never boils" applies. It will feel like forever. Bring in a book or a couple of magazines and leave the watch at home. 6) Stay rather calm in the recovery room
I hope some of this helps. Good luck to you and your little boy!!!

2 out of my three kids have had tubes done in there ears, it is very nerve racking to know they are going to be put under anestsia, but they came out fine. They are a liitle anxious when they wake up from the drugs and will sleep most of the rest of they day. Your son willbe find there are many precations take just make sure you follow all preop instructions because I have seen them turn parent away if they though kids had some thing to eat or drink prior to surury.

There is nothing to be "freaked out" about, it is a simple procedure, he will come out of it just fine, he will have a sore throat for awhile and it's best if he desn't try to talk...he will get to eat ice cream and popcicles all he wants...Yippee a SUGAR HIGH...LOL he will be fine...will probably sleep most of the day when he gets out of the hospital. The end.

Although there is some risk for every surgery, this is one of the low risk. He will be fine. My sisters were 6 & 8 when they had their done. When he gets home give him jello, ice cream, popcicles, and whatever else the doctor says he can have.

It will be okay. I had a tonsilectomy like last year, and I am just fine. After surgery, just give him popsicles, ice cream, jello, pudding, and whatever else the doctor says he can eat.

They're taking his tonsils out? Egads, that's barbaric. They haven't done that in twenty years around here.
I know that this isn't the "words of wisdom to help me calm down" that you want to hear, but if I were you, I would be inclined to get a second opinion or two.

TRY TO RELAX AND DON'T SHOW HIM YOUR FREAKING OUT , BECAUSE ALL YOU GOING TO DO IS TO SCARE HIM. HE WILL BE FINE, THEY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING. AND WHEN HE GOES HOME YOU CAN HAVE SOME ICE CREAM. BUT HES IN GOOD HANDS. SO RELAX. I KNOW ITS HARD TO DO, BUT YOU CAN DO IT.
