leave something everyday just in case there are differnent maids doing your room. what if the same maid makes your room 4 days in a row and then on the 5th day you leave a tip but the maid is a different one and gets all the the money and don't share it. That would be a bit unfair I usually leave $5.

Just like waitresses at a restaurant, the maids get a modest paycheck and they don't work the full week. So in order to get a tip to each maid that cleaned your room, it's best to tip every day before you leave in the morning. The amount? Not sure... but when me and a friend stayed in a double room (or room with two beds) that normally goes for $70-80 a night, we left $4 to $5 every morning before we left for our activities. What is that, nearly 10%, (considering our discount)?

Unless you know the same person will be cleaning your room for the entire stay, tip daily. Most places do not have the same maid more than a couple of days in a row. If you wait until the end of your stay, one person may get all the tip that should have been divided by all that were of service to you.

It's customary (and a bit more polite) to tip at the END of your stay, but i have the same feeling about service (ie, maybe they'll do a better job if they get tipped up front). I think maybe you could get away with giving her a little teaser tip at the beginning if you have a number of special requests (press it into her hand as you tell her what you need)... then give the big tip at the end as a thank you (maybe include a little thank you note, too).

No tip until The Last day
unless she performs some extra service.
say you wanted more towels in the middle of the day and she brings them then you would tip at least a dollar at that time.
for maid service the amount left is up to your conscious and the quality of the room and the service.
so leave more at a five star hotel, where they turn down your bed and leave chocolate mints etc. than at a motel where they may only change towels and sheets..

We leave a tip (usually just a couple of bucks b/c we rarely stay in expensive hotels) every day unless we know it is the same person cleaning each day. One time we stayed in a hotel for two months for work and gave the maid one very large tip in an envelope with the person's name on it at the end of our stay.

I agree with Stinky. Leave a tip every day, say 10-15%. that let's the maid know you're a tipper and you should get great service from her.
I have a great grill chef at my favorite seafood place. Each Christmas I slip him a nominal tip $20. You;d be surprised how much service that gets you.

sometimes different maids work different rooms or different days. if daily service, i usually just leave 3 dollars if they are only exchanging towels, emptying trash and restocking cups, etc. I usually make the bed myself and ask them not to changed the sheets if they aren't dirty and same with floor...not vacuumed, if not needed.
but if you leave a HUGE mess, then 5-7.
if someone gave exceptional service, then also leave a note with the front desk for the manager praising the service. this is a real moral booster and can be used to support a request for a raise.

I'd leave it at the end of your stay and 15 to 20% is the going rate in the US.
