It depends on the laws for your state or area, and you didn't say where you were, but I can answer generally based on specific Oklahoma law, since all states are similar.

Your vehicle wasn't registered, so it was ordered towed for "taxes due the state." All you had to do to go get the vehicle was bring the plates up to date, show it was yours, show current insurance and pay the tow bill, which wouldn't have been very high at the beginning. Apparently you didn't, so after some time had passed they notified you they would be selling the vehicle in a lien sale, and gave you some time again to claim the vehicle, usually 10 days or so. Apparently you again ignored the notice and let the sale go on.

After the sale, they would subtract the amount received on the sale from your total bill, which would now be very high and have the additional costs of the sale added in, and bill you for that amount. Apparently you still didn't respond. So now it's out of the tow companies hands since they turned it over to a collection agency. Apparently you now owe $1500.00. Interest will drive it higher if you ignore the collection agency, who can take you to court and collect court and attorney's fees if they prevail. Bottom line, there is no maximum. Call and talk to the collection agency.

Tow charge of about $150. Then $30.00 a day for storage. Yeah, that's about right. The time to sort it out at much less cost was a day or so after it was towed. Why did you wait?

The tow operator is entitled to be paid. If the car was sold to settle the lien and the proceeds didn't cover the charges then yes, you have to pay up.

You'll need to research your state's law regarding towing and lien sales. Each state is different, but one thing is certain....they have to give you notice of the sale first.
