It's not that it's a "bad" word, but it is innapropriate to use at certain times. Very young children can not determine that while a word may be ok to use at home, it may be rude to use at other times, such as in public or at someone elses home. If you feel your child is to young to determine apropriate times to use the word, teach them to use the term "pass gas" which is more socially acceptable. If your child is older and able to determine apropriatness beter, just explain its okay to say fart at home or with their friends but you dont want to hear it being used in front of, say, grandma or whatever.
My daughter is only 2 and hasn't said the word yet, but it's definitly not a word i would want to hear her yell out at the mall. Personally i don't care for the word at all, and normally use "pass gas" if i really feel the need to talk about flatulance, which is extremely rare. I'm not stuffy or old, i'm only a 24 year old mother, i just believe in manners and am big on respect. There is just something crass about the word "fart" and believe that teaching your child not to talk about bathroom issues in front of other people is as important as teaching "please" and "thank you" and proper table manners. I guess the correct answer here has to be for you to go with what feels comfortable to you. If you don't have a problem with your kid saying fart, then hey, whatever. But if your like me and don't think it's apropriate, then why would you let your child do or say anything you are uncomfortable with?

I don't love the potty talk/humor at all. My kids love it and I am a real stick in the mid about it. But it's really not a bad word so I let them say it - I would prefer if they used something cutsey. I did tell them they have to say excuse me if they do it si I will often hear my little one say excuse me and I won't know why and then I figured that she "fluffed" LOL My kids are 5, 3 and 8 months.

Whats wrong with the word "fart" ? After all it will be a while before they can say "flatulence" or "excuse me while I go express gas".. When did Fart become the new 4 letter word I must have missed that memo. Besides we all do it regardless if its as loud as an elephants trump or as silent as mouse fart.

I think the word "fart" its fine i always say it i never say passed gas it just sounds strange to me. Unless their using it as an insult like saying i don give a fart then i wouldn't think it inappropriate.

Hee hee, I love the word fart and both my kids say it 8 & 13(in fact everyone i know says it) They both say "pardon me" afterwards. Fart is a lovely word and i'm sure it was invented to laugh at.
