You can buy one at Radioshack or auto parts stores. They go by the name 'multimeter' or 'volt/ohm meters'.

Actually most of the original meters were analog , with the needle showing the response . . . sort of like many car's speedometers.
Digital is a newer product that displays the measurement in a numerical reading like 120 vac or 240 vac, instead of the needle moving around the scale in an arc.
Original music recordings were analog , a direct copy of the singers voice on wax ro vinyl. New music is recorded and digitized then loaded onto a CD and is not a true representation of the singer but a good approximation. Some people say it is better, tho, because the digitization can erase background noise.

But Wiki can probably explain it better

Voltage - Voltmeter; Electric Current - Ammeter; Voltage or Current waves measurement - Oscilloscope. You usually buy the voltmeters and ammeters combined in a single instrument called a multimeter (has a dial to select which instrument you're using).
