There are so many people out there wanting to breed or who already have that are on YA asking what to do next. When you tell them that they shouldn't breed they get defensive. Yet when a question is asked about why they breed....none have a good answer?

I think it's because they know they shouldn't be breeding but just don't care. What do you guys think?

It is because as I have been told it is a free country and if they pay the money for their dog it is their right to breed. No one has the right to tell them not to.
How I interpret this is they are greedy ignorant selfish people who are supplementing their income by breeding and they do not give a crap what happens to the pups they create and nor do they care about the 1000's of dogs waiting for homes that end up dying because of their irresponsible actions. The almighty dollar is a great motivator I'll bet if these Ignorant people were offered money not to breed there would be less animals born but as long as there is an incentive to breed they will never stop.
I am so sick of the questions I may have to take katslookup's suggestion!!!

YOU ARE SO RIGHT!!!

I recently asked the "did you intentionally breed your dog" question, with a few others with it, like did they do genetic testing on their dogs first and what did they do to "pick" the dog to breed with... I was curious to the responses it would get from all the people here "breeding". Funny thing, with all the breeding questions we see on here every day, most people didn't bother to answer that question... only a few.

So you are right on the money when you say "they know they shouldn't be breeding"! The way I see it, the didn't dare answer because they knew they were doing something wrong. Way too many byb on this forum. It's all about the mighty dollar for most of them!

I understand that puppies are cute but there is so much more to breeding than just letting the dog get pregnant and a lot of people don't realize that. I didn't when my dog got pregnant when i was in middle school. I didn't realize how much it was going to cost to deliver the dogs and take care of the. Yeah we sold them for $350 each but my parents spent that much taking care of them and my dog almost died during delivery. There are vet costs, shots that need done, worming, socialization and a good breeder will check into anyone getting a puppy and adopt them out not sell them but anymore you get a lot of backyard breeders just looking for a quick buck. They breed the dogs then sale them to who ever will pay there high price without really doing what is best for the dog. I agree there needs to be a lot less of that. Breeding for the good of the breed is one thing but not breeding just to have the cute puppies to make money off of.

I breed labrador retrevers. I do it because I love labs and I enjoy the sport, showing dogs and trying to develop the best labs possible. Many people think you make a fortune selling pups. Not the trouth. I have one or two litters a year with maybe 6-15 pups a year it costs me about 3000.00 a year to feed and care for my 5 dogs. Premeium food, vet bills training. Plus breeding fees are $500-1200 depending on the dog. Then show expences roughly $85.00 per dog per show. If you win best of breed you get no money you get a ribbon. The puppy mills are the only ones who make big bucks. If you want to see my dogs check my web site burdicklabradors.com. I hope this helps.
I'm not saying there are not bad breeders out there, believe me there are plenty.

Greed, then wanting it for the experience.

I've had a few litters, but I've tested my dogs for hips, elbows, eyes, heart, and thyroid, AND gave refunds for spay/neuter and any agility titles or CGC titles. It was hard work, but I loved it. I met great people, and vowed to take back any of my dogs at any time.

If everyone did that, we'd have less problems. Breeding mixes that people want? Not bad, IF you do all of the aforementioned things. The bottom line- I'd rather have an inch of dog than miles of pedigree, so papers aren't as valuable as we'd like them to be.

I have a golden retriever and a boxer/giant schnauzer mix (she's spayed) that I got at the shelter (my golden is the stud dog). If you breed 'em, you should also be willing to take in other dogs!

People are ignorant. I read those questions, and it is upsetting that there are people who go to any means to justify their experience that they want. I wonder if any of these people have been told no before.

Breeding should be left to those trying to improve the breed or for those that like to participate in dog shows.

A reputable breeder will be lucky if they match their cost, because most of them do not make much of a profit due to the extensive cost of taking care of the dam/sire, taking care of the puppies, etc.

If a person is going to breed and be a reputable breed (as well as breed for a good cause improving the breed/ show dogs) they should have extensive knowledge on breeding. They should have been guided by a reputable breeder. They should know where to find studs/b*tches, what to do when their damn is whelping, etc. As well as be under the close care of a vet, and guided by a vet.

They wouldn't be popping on a forum asking what signs to watch for when their b*tch is whelping, or where to find a stud/b*tch to mate with, or what happens when my puppies are born.

Breeding because "my dog is cute" or I want them to have puppies, I think these two dogs will make a cute mix is just kind of fishy. So I would have to agree with you on your statement/opinions.

Just to add even with you have AKC registered dogs doesn't necessarily means that your dog is regsitered to breed. AKC also has limited registration which is a good way to register your dog so that they can be put into dog shows, but they can't be bred.

I am wondering the same thing myself. I think the worst answer I've heard yet is the one who wants her mutt "schnoodle" to experience motherhood so she's planning to breed. Yet when everyone told her that it was simply irresponsible to breed mutts, she went on about how they were registered and all, trying to justify it.

I think some people don't want to hear the real answers or see the actual reality of pet overpopulation. How many of these breeders have visited an animal shelter or animal control facility? I'm willing to bet few if any. They are happy to live in their little la-la fantasy lands, not caring about the consequenses of their actions or ever willing to see or explore the other side of pet breeding. I guess some people just don't want the right answers, just the answers they want to hear or the ones they agree with.

Unfortunately the human brain is capable of justifying its own wants and desires. The "Me Generation" of today only needs to say" I want it." They dont care how as long as its NOW and when they no longer want it, its gone. They dont care how about that either. Its not just dogs, cats and pets. It is every aspect of their lives. They actually get married with the attitude "If it doesn't work out, I'll just get a divorce." The dumbest thing I hear today is "Even though we have a baby, we aren't getting married because we aren't ready for commitment?" What the HELL is a kid if not a commitment??? I have two adopted kids because and I quote " THEY AREN"T CUTE ANYMORE! I ONLY LIKE BABIES!!" So my point being......we can all preach till we're blue in the face...People do what THEY want.

I think most people get defensive not because they know they shouldn't be breeding, but because they didn't ask for opinions. People are asking HOW to do something (fact), not whether or not they SHOULD (opinion). Most people, in any category and even in real life, respond with defensiveness when they are flooded with opinions they didn't ask for.

hmmmm... depends what you think is a good answer. If you are dead set against breeding, most people cant or wont answer to how you like so you think there answer isnt that good. I guess I am a breeder and if you have time and the patients to read everything I would tell you as to why I choose it. Then I can email you if you like. Otherwise it would take up the entire screen and I would get carpal Tunnel in my wrists.
