I’m in my early 30’s and recently purchased a cemetery plot. Rather that let it sit there and receive any use from it until I’m dead, I’ll like to partake in some summer activities this coming year. The grounds are kept so nice and the grass is so green, I’d like to sunbathe on it. I’d also like to get outdoors and use it for some stretching, yoga and even cookout on my portable grill. I’ve told a few of my friends about these plans and they state the cemetery may not let me “hang out” there. I disagree – I bought the land and have the paper work to show anyone who may oppose my recreation. So, I guess my question – Is this acceptable? Don’t I have the right to do as I please, as the plot is mine?

Yes you have the right as the plot belongs to you. But you also have to see the obverse of the situation. Those that own the plots around yours don't have to like what you are doing on yours. If they choose they can ask you to leave if they think you are disrupting the peaceful nature of the cemetery.

You really have to think of how "uncool" it would be to sunbathe in the cemetery. Unless of course you are Gothic and are trying to make some statement.

Do you have a deep seated desire to hang out with dead bodies?

Put the crack pipe down and read carefully:

A cemetary has rules, believe it or not, with restricitions & regulations for its use. Check your contract.

Your sense of entitlement is ignorant, sorry. You own a postage stamp size piece of land - in a cemetery - not much bragging rights there, yet you try.

Hopefully this question is in jest - if not, get a life and buy a REAL piece of land in which to enjoy yourself and have some respect for those that are resting in the cemetery and their loved ones!

No. It is disrespectful as in morals. Let's say someone just died and there was a funeral going on right next to your plot. Would you sit half-nude with a weiner grilling on the grill? And the people in mourning checking out your stiff in Speedos?

Yes, I actually did see a girl in a bathing suit on top of someone's grave. It was very disturbing to see. That is plain sick.

Go to the park, the top of your roof, backyard, or friend's yard. Plenty of avenues.

While you are viewing this as a legal matter, try to think about this from the perspective of others that may be in the cemetery mourning. If your mother/father/sibling/lover had just died, how would you feel if you were visiting his or her grave and looked over to see some strange woman sunbathing a few feet away? There are many, many places where you can go to have fun, but people in mourning only have one place to go to feel close to their lost loved ones.

The activities you are talking about are best enjoyed at a park or a beach. The dead don't want you stompin' on their sleeping grounds. Wait until you are ready to sleep there permanently yourself then party on!

You have the right to be buried there, nothing more, nothing less.

If you're worried about it "sitting there until you're dead" why did you purchase it so soon? And besides, what makes you so sure it'll sit there all that long...you sound like someone who likes to tempt fate.

Thansk for the laugh!!! I would read the contract for the plot. Does it specifically say you are buying the plot to eventually be buried?

Seems to me if you'd like to have a picnic on your own property it would be ok. As for sports, I think it would be best to take your neighbors into consideration. Even though they likely won't say anything in protest, they'd probably like to rest in peace. Just keep your activities quiet for the benefit of nearby funerals in progress.
