By knowing really well how to use Excel you can do almost anything....
I once created a whole system to automatically pre-qualify a person to receive a mortgage loan based on basic and specialized information given....
20 minutes of work (pre-qualifying a client) reduced to 1 minute of work...
now I can pre-qualify 20 people instead of one in 20 minutes... Thats only an example, but like that I have done systems which fill complete forms automatically, others that see the mortgage process and analyze it in graphs, others that analyze the growth of businesses.... All these with the built-in functions... I am not even using Macros, because I don't know how to use Macros, but I bet it would be much much more incredible with Macros...
Any specific question of how to do something in Excel, email me to cra_88@hotmail.com

Lotus Approach is supposed to be similar to Access but I find it much more powerful and easier to use. Microsoft works so hard to force you to use their stuff, it makes the stuff not work as well.
Lotus focuses on making the stuff actually work, so it is a lot more friendly. I believe that Lotus Suite has graphical stuff though I use Corel for a lot more flexibility.

Try download.com its safe and is usually free. They have a lot of software downloads for what you are trying to do. Or go to an MS office website and see if you can find some help there.

You definitely want to look up SPSS and for the love of me I can't remember what it stands for.
Stastical Package Social Science or something like that... It's a pain to learn but very good.

Hi
I used something called MathCad at university when I was studying Functions, with it I could also produce charts, comparison graph, grahs of functions. etc.
I decided to forget about functions once I had completed this module so I did not get chance to explore its full uses and limitations.
information on mathcad:
http://www.ptc.com/products/mathcad/detailed_information.htm
Hope this helps

Access is necessary for true deep analysis of data.
I don't care for it either but I find it very powerful. Much more so then Excel.

I don't know what kind of data analysis, but if you mean statistical analysis, I've used FoxPro and SPSS.
