You know those people who drink enough to puke every Friday night but can still hold down a job and not a social outcast. Someone who can hold their liquir but eventually get so drunk that the only other thing on their mind is either banging some girl or going for a CURRY! Would these people be considered alcoholics?

It's hard to know. But a good rule of thumb is to say the inability to stop that behavior, even when it is having a bad effect on one's life is a good sign of a drinking problem.

As for being able to hold down a job, that makes no difference, I once worked for a corporate attorney who almost never appeared drunk, held down a job. But the drinking effected his behavior and when his family needed him to stop drinking, he took to hiding his booze and yet still managed to go to work everyday. That is the kind of behaviour exhibited by what is called a functional alcoholic

It's just a word game. If you cannot function as a normal member of society without alcohol, then you have a problem.
If you look forward to hanging out with your friends on the weekend and getting hammered, enjoy your early 20's. If you're still doing it at 35, you may want to rethink how your life is going...

The only difference is the level or degree of alcoholism. There's no black and white; yes or no; either you are or aren't...there are many grey areas of alcoholism and addcition. It's up to you to recognize what you are doing to your body and decide what you will do about it.

If, when you honestly want to, you find that you can not quit entirely, or if when drinking, you have little or no control over the amount you take, you are probably an alcoholic.

An alcoholic HAS to drink and can't control it when he does.

A Drunk is just Stupid.

The person you describe MAY be or may in time become alcoholic but destructive behavior isn't the entire profile.
