The British Empire brought the countries it invaded huge improvements. They took over an India where women, once their husbands died, were forced to jump on the funeral pyre and burn to death, and soon freed them of that "responsibility"!
Do you know how big India, Africa, Australia, Canada....I could go on....are? Can you imagine the sort of Empire which could lay train tracks across them, or bring medicine, universities, Rhodes scholarships...
True history does not = what a few left-wing celebrities want you to think.

It's neither ironic nor deserved.
Immigration happens all over the world, legal and illegal. People leave poor conditions for richer ones. People leave oppression for freedom. People leave a spotty past for a brighter future. People leave because a loved one is leaving, or already lives elsewhere. There are myriad reasons for immigration.
The fact that Britain is experiencing a large influx of immigrants is really just a cycle. Every few years the country receiving the greatest influx of immigrants changes, especially in Europe. A few years ago it was the French complaining about all the African and Middle Eastern immigrants. Before that the Italians and Spanish. And before that it was the British in the 80's complaining about all the Indian immigrants. It goes round and round.
That said, be grateful for the chance to experience the multi-cultural diversity that the United States already has. And besides, I think an attractive Indian woman with a British accent (like Parminder Nagra, the Indian girl in "Bend It Like Beckham") is pretty damn sexy!

The English did not invade The United states of America, there was no such place when the English Pilgrims landed here. This was a vast continent, inhabited by many Indian tribes.the English started colonies which later united to make the colonial settlements. This country was English, only the rebellion changed our country to a few states united as the government we have today In size at that time the Spanish and French had larger holdings than we.We bought Alaska from Russia,a large part of the country was bought from Napoleon. This one country the British did not acquire by invasion. The shiploads of people going to England now will soon be coming here,so look out.

No country has a perfect history - there were plenty of other countries which assumed ownership and ruling of far flung places in our history. I'm not sure if we were any worse or not - we did leave some good things - transport infrastructures etc, though it is a tenuous argument - because the UK can never give enough to some countries/peoples in their opinion. Immigrants are mis-sold the dream of the rich and comfy UK - do they realise that wages are relative and that in the UK the standard of living due to the cost of living not being met by rises in salaries is declining? Still - I guess when you can work on the black market that makes a economic difference.

Just deserved you think?
Take India for example.
England provided -
railways, postal system, telegraphic communications, irrigation, increased exports :- tea, coffee, silk. Abolished suttee and infanticide. Removed Thugs, Pindarees, and other trouble makers out of Indian society. Allowed Hindu widows to re-marry and provide aid in times of famine. Brought education to males and females. Brought peace, order, freedom of speech. Provided political knowledge and improvement of government system. Freedom of opression caused by the greedy rulers.
Still to this day, many Indians don't see the benefits or even appreciate the benefits of the British Empire in India.
Yes, The Empire, may not have been perfect in it's rule in India, but it did it's bloody best which is more than what I can say of many other dominating nations... Look at Africa now that we have left. Not exactly stable is it.. why the hell do you think they want to come here?
So no.. it isn't deserverd or ironic. We had our motives which of course was trade and expansion, but we did try and help to improve countries along the way. The repayment was a big middle finger up at our nation. Grass always seems to be greener does it not? Now that we have gone, they want to come here. I wonder why?

I know of lots of Countries that the English Did not invade .But can you tell me a country of any significance in back history that did not invade an other country .what about the red Indians in America .Every Nationality that went to the USA is responsible for wiping out the Tribes of Red Indians. So what is the connection of your ship loads of people coming here to day because of your ideas ..Of history years ago if that is your philosophy .Should not thousands be making their way to the Mongolian Empire and Egypt .Italy .The middle East Spain France .Why do you just choose certain parts of history to try to rubber stamp your old fashioned ideas. .Do you think that the world would be a better place with a different passed history. .And you would,nt have all bag of tricks that go with it .you know the answer to that one I rest my case

The empire brought stability to a lot of these countries, it gave them a job a roof over their head and food in their stomach, plus security, something that is now sadly lacking in a lot of these countries today, which is why a lot of them want to come here as they have none of these things now in their countries.
Of course we are now paying the price for being a empire and some of the things we did we should not be proud of, but being British we will carry out our obligations to those people.
The sad thing about all these things is that we care more about the old empire than we do about our own people, I'm referring to the way we treat our old soldiers and treat them like 2nd class citizens,as they are no longer of use to us !

I think it is not only because of the empire but also because of the english language that the country is so vigourosly "promoting" across the world. If you teach the world your language and culture no wonder the world would wanna see where all has come from.

I see that Crusty doesn't know his history, it was William the bastard of Normandy who invaded in 1066 not he Vikings who arrived after the Romans left.
However we did not invade every country, mostly the influence was by trade and that expanded to include running the countries that we traded with, it was also to defend our trade from the other European countries and the wars were with them not the locals.

Ah the good old days. People have a tendency to judge events of the past on the morals of the present.
Lets face it, India is on the brink of becoming a superpower, and why, we all know why.
