I have a 6 1/2 year old male cream tabby. One of his favorite activities is to groom me or my husband. Is this just a friendly act or is he trying to assert authority?

Congratulations! :)

When a cat chooses to groom his/her human, it is a sign of both affection and he is accepting you as another cat! :) Cats groom each other as a way of showing love and they use that same principle on us. It's like our equivalent of giving each other cuddles and hugs. He may even try to bite your hand but he won't bite too hard. He'll just press his teeth gently onto your skin. That's a kitty kiss!

Apparently your cat-baby just loves you and your hubby to pieces!

With a stray cat it truly is puzzling to appeal to close why they act the way they do. If he's being aggressive in the route of you and your relatives a tremendous type of distinct issues might want to properly be happening. Do you've the different pets- and hence a vet? Or is there a PetSmart with a Banfield puppy medical institution close by? you would possibly want to attempt taking him in (in a secure puppy service) to have him scanned to confirm if he's microchipped. you should also call animal shelters to confirm if everyone has reported a cat lacking that matches his description. besides the undeniable fact that, if he's nipping/biting/scratching you shouldn't reward him along with your contact anymore. He might want to have a ailment, at the same time with rabies, which could heavily impression people. at present he likely thinks that you're a nutrition source, and in case you provide up feeding then you definitely he receives protective and attempt to MAKE you provide him nutrition. If it truly is the way he's appearing, provide up feeding him. it can make you experience undesirable (fairly for the reason that he's begging) besides the undeniable fact that it truly is optimal now to not feed stray animals for this very reason. i wish you artwork some thing out! (:

Do you mean by licking you? It's just friendly. I've had so many cats in my life, yet I've only owned 2 cats that lick people. It's affection. One of the cats I have now does it, she's such a sweet cat. She's kind of scared of people, so I know it isn't to assert authority... she couldn't assert authority over a mouse if she wanted to. Don't worry about it, just let him lick you. Try not to get brush burn! :P

This is definitely a good thing. It's his way of saying you are one of us! You should feel honored, he's accepted you and your husband into his family! If you know anything about cats, then you know that he's really the boss! I have a mother cat and two of her "kittens", (now almost 3 years old each) and they all still groom each other every day, only now it always escelates into major playtime! It is fun to watch, though!

You are members of his pride. He sees you as his other "cats" and he's grooming you, much as a male lion would groom the mates and friends he has in a pride.

This is such a wonderful compliment!

You are the cat's meow to him. :)

He is being very affectionate and cleaning you just like a Mommy cat does with her babies. It's very rare to find a male cat doing this. As long as he is NOT biting you, leave him alone as this is also comforting and "bonding" time for him, too.

Grooming is a social thing for cats... like monkeys.... he's just looking after his favorite kitty buddies... you!

I think it is a sign of affection. Especially if he does not do that to everyone.
