"Either life was created by god or it happened by accident."
Usually followed by
"I like to believe I'm not an accident, therefore god exists."
It's not that simple, why do people reduce these things to such an absurd level? Why is life an accident if god doesn't exist? Life could be an accident that god had... ever think of it that way? If he does exist maybe he was going for something completely different but ended up with us instead?
Of course, there really isn't any evidence that a god does exist, even then i don't consider us an "accident." That word implies that something was supposed to happen one way but turned out another way. It seems the only way to have our existence be an accident is to have some consiousness driving the whole thing... god. So, it really makes no sense to say that either god made us or we are an accident... because if we are an accident it implies that god still made us... just not the way he wanted to.

I kind of went off on a tangent there. The point is, it's not an either or... there could be an infinite number of possibilites to explain our existence.

Christians have it in their heads that the mere fact of human existence somehow proves the reality of a deity: "I exist, therefore God." Yet, if not for the Permian and various other extinctions throughout the eons, life would have evolved very differently and humans might not even exist. So, in a sense, all people are accidents, or maybe "chance occurances" is a better word. An asteroid or comet could obliterate human life someday, and our fossils will be merely interesting museum oddities to the next intelligent species, should any evolve.

The problem line is "I like to believe I'm not an accident, therefore god exists."
Unfortunately, in the world of reality, things do not become what we want simply because we desire them. I am happy to accept that I am an accident of the universe.

You are right. There COULD be an infinite number of possibilities but only one is true because they all can't be true at the same time. So here it is... "In the beginning God created..." and that's the Truth!

That logic is like playing teeter totter with yourself....running back and forth beyond each of the points of balance....eventually you will fall on one side.
But the real problem I have is with your first statement in the last paragraph. There is alot of evidence. How do you explain personal spiritual awakenings? Born again experiences? Miracles? Creation of a prefectly interacting ecology?

God does not have "accidents". Everything He does is perfect and well thought.

Because to the fundamentalist it is all black and white never a shade of grey, they can't handle more than two alternatives.

Simply my friend
[022:066] It is He, Who gave you life, and then will cause you to die, and will again give you life (on the Day of Resurrection). Verily, man is indeed an ingrate.
