It was a sophisticated military spy satellite recently discovered by the United States and Russia. Because of the orbit of the satellite, and the fact that the Chinese had no real explanation for the orbit, it was decided to destroy the satellite rather than explain the reason for its existence.

it was an useless old satelite, and to blow it up with a missile requires high military technology. The act was basically a military test. and china proved that it is now a country with the abilities to blow up a satelite with a missile
china is now the third country with that ability, after US, Russia(from the Soviet Union)
