Dogs chase cats because they don't get a long, but some dogs will befriend cats. Dogs smell other dog's butts to see if its male of female, for mating season.

It's their instincts.
Whoever gave me a thumbs down is an idiot and should do some research. It's not because cats and dogs don't get along... It's because it's the instinct of dogs to chase anything that runs. Ever noticed that? It's not coincidence. They'll even chase a person when it runs, doesn't mean they'll bite it. My dog even sniffs my cats butts and my hamsters butt when I had one, so that's obviously instinct too, it's not like he's giving a very doggy hello to my cats and hamster.

you know how we shake hands to say hello. well that's what dogs and cats do when they sniff each other
