Yes!!!!!!!!!!! I hate that so much. Thank you for making it known to the public. It is not nice to say sweetie unless they are in person and even then they may deserve a punch.

I think it depends on the tone and how well you know the person. They also might be covering up that they forgot your name. If it really bothers you, the best thing is to respond with humor. The next time someone says, "Sweetie" to you, just reply with, "OK Mr. Snookywooky Huggy Bear!" When they look at you like you have 3 heads, simply explain that you prefered to be called by your name and not "Sweetie" (or "Honey" or "Dear").

Now you're going to have some peeps calling you, "Sweetie," just to piss you off. It is rather annoying and presumptuous. Just say, "yes sweetie," or "uh huh sweetie" or "is that so, sweetee?"
or, "if you say so, sweetee." lol

It's supposed to be patronizing, that's why people do it. I'm a straight dude and sometimes I say things like that ("hun",) when i feel like I'm talking to someone who really needs to hear my answer. It's like "for real, listen to me..." i dunno thats how I think of it anyways

Hun, I don't know what you are on about or why you would find that irritating.

Did you forget to take your happy pills today?

"Hate" is a very angry & harsh word.

I can think of more harsh patronization.
