I've got my cat Lili (almost 3 years old now) and she wasn't necessarily an abused cat when I got her, it was just that she was rejected by her mother, weaned early and given as a pet to a three year old girl. You can imagine the trauma, I'm sure. My situation has changed, and I'm back at my mother's house for the time being. Lili's fine around other cats (wants to be friends, but my mom's old ladies don't want to be friends with her), but Mason (my parent's Boston Terrier) wants to be friends with her. It's just, well, he's a Boston Terrier, (Can we say spastic?), and she's a scardy-cat. They're both trying to be friends, but I'm out of ideas other than locking them in the same room until the screaming stops..........

It's not that Mason's mean or anything, just that he's got this 3 foot perimeter thing... he gets close and he starts wanting to play -his- way, Lili's not into sudden movements or loud noises and things... she has sniffed his butt though. (Then she made a funny face and ran off) They're trying, it's just... I dunno, maybe I'm too impatient.......

This actually sounds like a great match to me. I know the little Boston Terrier had to feel like "the odd-man-out", and coming into a home already "adorned" with "Old Ladies",your Lili didn't stand much of a chance either. Hang in there, kiddo---they will be just fine and make very good friends. Good luck to you. ....oh, and, uhh, as far as "spastic" goes--I'll have to get back to you on that one. Think the jury's still out.

Years ago I lived with different roommates that had pets. Kitty was always happy when she knew that I was in the house so no matter where or who she was around as long as I was there she adjusted. Sometimes it would take awhile, but she always learned to deal with the other animals.
I'm sure if you continue to reassure the cat in time she will accept the other animals. I don't think i would lock them in a room, but maybe some time when the dog is mellow you can convince the 2 of them to sit with you and they may get more comfortable with each other.

Girl, that is too funny, but to give you a straight answer...you just have to let them have their space and time to adjust to each other, if they're already trying to be friends that's a great start. You'll never be able to teach her anything....didn't you know that she's the boss!...at least in her mind anyway. Good luck

They'll probably go back and forth between playing and fighting until, several scratches and possibly a missing limb later, they've worked out their power structure and relationship details. If they're only working out dominance issues and not actively trying to kill one another, I'd just let them handle it.
