How you treat it could depend on the cause. If it's allergy-related it may be post-nasal drip. In that case an allergy med such as loratadine combined with a decongestant, pseudoehpedrine, can be helpful (Claritin-D, for example). Water is great for thinning secretions in the mainstem bronchi but not as effective for this but include it anyway. You may have to see your primary doctor or an allergist in the long run. If it's PND, it can lead to bronchitis over time.

The best thing doesn't even have to be purchased. It's water, just plain water. It can be juice or herbal tea, but it's just fluids that are dairy and caffeine free.
Clear liquids will help to thin your mucus and to keep your throat moist. Keeping your throat moist will help to both prevent further inflammation and get rid of the inflammation that's already present.
This was drummed into my head, and my siblings' heads, by our father, who was a pharmacist.

Sore throat is usually due to a viral infection. Gargling with warm salty water or mouthwash can reduce the pain and inconvenience. More details and home remedies available at http://ailments.in/sorethroat.html

Go sit in a hot shower for 30 minutes before buying something, as hot as you can stand it.
