and practically lay on top of him, smother him in kisses, and he doesn't do a thing. No hissing, no growling, doesn't try to get away, he just lays there and takes it with his ears half back. Do you think this annoys the crap out of him or does he take it just to amuse me?

He tolerates you because he loves you, for as annoying as you are, you feed him and love him and he knows it. I have a 3 year old boy tabby that I do the same thing to, and he reacts the same way. I know he doesn't particularly love it, but he tolerates me because he knows it means I'll always be there to feed him and give him treats. And furthermore, if I go away and he's not smothered with kisses for a day or two, even though he's still fed and given treats, when I come back he's upset with me, almost as if he missed my obnoxious kisses. Even though it's annoying, it's love, and he knows it :)

My initial reaction was the same as Aslan's. Then I read the messages and he supported my reaction. Ears laid back is not a "welcoming" sign from your cat. I would modify your behavior a little. He is not going to strike out at you and he is not being placed in a happy position to have to accept attentions he really doesn't like.

I kiss Kinsey sometimes and I know he really hates it so I try to control my impulse.

When a cat flattens his ears all the way back, that is a defensive position. Even though your kitty isn't growling or hissing when you pounce on him like that, be sure that it IS stressing him out.

the ears going back shows his real feelings

however he is deferring to you by not complaining

i think however to think about your relative size to him and that you could be causing him pain

what is wrong with stroking him instead?

it just shows that your cat likes it when u do that to him.. it's nothing unusual because some cats loves to be pampered and have their owners give them attention
