G'day,

I am assuming that you are working in Melbourne. As TonyB said, as a start, the best place to rent will be the area around where you work. Obviously you do not want to travel right across the town to work from where you live, especially since you are a newcomer, just because we told you that the areas are good. Unfortunately you did not mention where do you currently live or where do you currently work, so we can tell you what do Melbournians generally think about the suburb. Once you know Melbourne better, then you can move out and maybe buy your own property with better confidence.

I do not however share the same opinion with TonyB in regards to staying with Iranian. I am an immigrant as well in Melbourne and I understand that quite a lot of immigrant are looking for the area where people from the same country of origin generally live for the reason of support and cultural familiarity. That's why we have the Vietnamese in Richmond, Springvale and Footscray, the Hong Kong in Box Hill, Jewish in Caulfield etc. Having said that, I do also encourage you to blend in with people from other cultures and backgrounds, after all that's why you made the move right?!
Unfortunately I do not have much information in regards to Iranian, but I do know that there are quite a large Muslim community in Brunswick, as you can also see when you are driving along Sydney Rd. So it might be a starting point.

I am enclosing some real-estate websites for your own benefits, so you can compare prices on different suburbs.

Good luck and hope this help & welcome to Melbourne.

Suburbs closer to the city are generally "better", but are more expensive. Same for those beside the beach.

Living closer to your work is always a better idea as it saves travel times. There are no really "bad" suburbs - except somewhere like Dandenong or Noble Park which have high crime rates.

No idea where Iranians live - but if you want to live with other Iranians then go and live in Iran. You've come to Australia so live with Australians.
