If you are an undergrad, then live in the dorms. Can beat the price and you will meet people that you will be friends with the rest of your life.

The price thing also applies to grad school (not sure if they have grad dorms)

greenwhich village very nice and very expensive 1 bedroom will run you over 1500, for a nice 1 bedroom 2000 or more might get you something more than a 400sqft apartment. East Village is bigger and closer to NYU and is also a little cheaper, if you move to the east village you could get a better deal if you got roomates, but who wants roomates. You could get a studio way east in the east village very small, probably in a basement for 900. other then that 1200 for a 1 bedroom. both neighborhoods are safe, east village has more of a scene, and you'll have more fun if you like to go out. Greenwhich is cool but besides restaurants there ain't much to do. None of the buildings have elevators so be prepared to walk, but enjoy nyu. i live on the upper west side 65th st.

I went to NYU, but I lived at home with my parents. It's a great school; I loved my years there. When I graduated, I took an apartment in the West Village; I loved that too. Start scouring Craig's List. Get a map of New York and learn the neighborhoods so that you understand that when you see Bay Ridge - that it's in Brooklyn; East New York is in Brooklyn, very far from Manhattan and is a poor neighborhood with a high crime rate and you don't want to be anyway near there. Look at what's listed on today's Craig's list - sounds too good to be true. Look at the pictures and the floor plan - very, very big for a New York apartment. $2,700 a month including utilities - must have poltergeists or rats.

Here is today's New York apartment listings. There's a separate section for roommates, apartments to share, etc. These are simply the rentals.

Keep looking. There really are affordable apartments here, but they are very difficult to find.
Good luck

Ignore the idiots above -some-, Follow your heart, But be weary of the consiquences, being with someone every minute of everyday without as much space as you have not living with him can make a big splash on a relationship and is sometimes the cause of seperation, If my ex asked me to moved in with him I'd say no because Im weird about that kind of thing and i have to be ready myself, But Its completly upto you, If you want to be with him more and live in nyc which is a beautiful city, Go for it! Dont let anyone else tell you otherwise. Goodluck!!
