A relative has a ton of tapes that have been damaged. I wonder if it is possible to recover some of them.

Depends on what is on the tapes. If it is regular show movies then it will not be worth it. Now if it is nostalgic home movies, you may be able to save some of the tapes. Depends on what is important to you. Now you have to take a VCR tape apart so you can get the Idea of how to put it back. Now if you play a tape and it is one to keep, then take it apart get the plasitc components in warm water and soap, scrub, dry, and put back together. WEAR a mask so you do not breath any mold or mildew. Certain types of mold ARE BAD for you. Now if the movies play primo and you want to keep them, then do the above to clean the casing. Also in the home movies go to a film or camera store to buy stuff to splice tape together. In case you play a family tape, and maybe there is a bad section there. Also, you could have a DVD/VCR recorder. Play the VCR first, make notes on when to stop and start and you can record from VCR to DVD. Worked for me.
