I recently went for an allergy test, due to a bad reaction over the holiday season (Christmas Eve) after eating homemade cookies and sweets given to me by a friend. Within in an hour of eating them I started to get a runny nose then my throat felt scratchy & tight. Although I was concerned I did not go to the hospital, because I thought I was getting a cold. I took an antihistamine, but it did very little to help the nose & throat that night. By the following day the nose had stopped running, but my throat felt tight and it hurt to swallow. This lasted about three days and finally cleared up. I went for an allergy scratch test earlier this week, & the test found I had a small reaction to coconut. The doctor recommended I stay clear of coconut & get an epipen just in case my reaction is worse in the future. I’ve never had a reaction to coconut before, & although the reaction was shown to be small I am concerned. Does anyone else have a coconut allergy & can give me more info?

Yeah. . . a year ago my throat almost swelled shut about 1/2hr after eating a little of a raw, baby coconut. I had eaten processed coconut & coconut milk for years without issue. Allergies can appear at any age and can also change severity at any time.

Keep that epipen handy! You should also carry Benadryl too, to be used after the epipen.

Coconut oil can be used in vegetable oil & margarine -- I don't go out to eat anymore unless the restraunt lists -all- their ingredients online as well as their fryer oil; too many foods out there have vegetable oil, and there is no way to know if it is processed enough to get rid of all the coconut protein. (It might be okay, but I feel like I'm chancing it and coconut allergy is so rare that allergists seem totally useless here). Needless to say, this makes dating an absolute pain.

99.99% of all shampos use cocamide DEA (or other coconut derivatives) -- check out a health food store for coconut free alternatives if you notice any kind of skin problems. I've found two brands so far that are coconut free.

I've noticed coconut oil is very likely to appear in these products: bakery desserts, anything chocolate, majority of ice creams, all cool-whip like products.

Good luck. I wish I knew more!
