Many bad experiences with a sadistic dentist in the early seventies caused my phobia I think. Anybody out there overcome a similar problem?

You are not alone. I am fiftyone years old and still get sick (really) up to 24 hours before any dental appointment. I know it's silly but it's a mental thing that I don't know if I will ever overcome. I even threw-up once in the parking lot after I had some (minor) dental work done because of the terror and sensations of it all.
Dang, I am such a baby.

Add me to your club. Any dentist who makes you feel guilty is not worth having,Before he starts any work tell himy ou bite. They have fears but will not tell you what they are. everyone has a phobia. I know an MD who will not drive over a bridge, his wife has to do it. if they have no chair side manner and are arrogant, report them to the ADA. If they treat you that way, they treat others the same. Some need to be taken down a pace or a brace. Just get out the chair and say see you , bye. I didn't come here for your sarcasm..You are not showing education, only ignorance. Dentists are the most feared doctors of all and have the highest suicide rate. They have to treat you and use psychology to gain your confidence.

When I was younger I hated going to the dentist as well. I think I had yours. LOL Anyway, the one I have now is great. After the two years of having braces on (I'm 43 now), all the poking, prodding and tightening, going to the dentist is nothing now.

You know what else helps I think is the advances in the technology as well that makes it easier to go than we were kids.

Absolutely not! I hate the dentist. It's the drill I'm most frightened of. I always think I'm going to get my tongue in the way and ... I can't bare to even think...

But the other day I put a similar question on here and a dentist made me feel all guilty.

I was always scared to go. Had a bad experience in kindergarten. I found a great dentist when I was in my 30's. He gave me laughing gas and was very gentle. So I am not scared anymore. I still get anxious. I usually call my family doctor and ask for a Rx. Take one before I go and everything is alright. I am no longer afraid.

No you are not alone just the mention of the D word brings me out in a sweat! I'm terrified and I don't know why............
I've done a parachute jump, swam with dolphins(and I can't swim) tried mountain climbing, held snakes and spiders (yuk) I'll pretty much try anything but ........
I do go for my regular checkups, but have to be dragged there,I hold the chair like a vice and it takes all my courage to open my mouth--and i'm a woman!-- it's just crazy.
The one thing that makes me laugh though is when you have your mouth open and the D--- is probing and he asks you a question. How the flip can you answer him but with a uugghhhh!

My dislike of them started as a little kid when the man in the Frankenstein laboratory (old dental equipment just plain looks scary) would pull out his pliers.

Since then I've grown up, and dentistry has vastly improved. I've done a complete 180 degree, and you can do it, too. Ask around and get several recommendations --- then find a dental group that understands your phobias --- most of them do.

Welcome to the club. I've had a few bad experiences myself and I have since met a great dentist who is personable, friendly, good natured and easy on my gums.

Shop around and ask around. If you can afford it get dentistry while you sleep.

You can also try to get your hands on some seditives by your MD to help you take off the edge enough to sit in a chair, that help me initially.

Keep looking. they are for the most part very good. Things have changed a lot since those old days.

Blessings to you,
Dahlia
