Thats a very tough question. If you understand the risks involved then I would say that you are more prepared than most. However the issue I am having is the idea that joining a military unit would help with your esteem level. While the nature of boot camps these days have changed in relation to when I went through, the whole point of boot camp is to weed out those who cannot hack it for one reason or another. (With some military specific training thrown in for good measure).

Obviously this is your choice and yours alone, and as such are looking for advice. Well, my only advice would be on which service you should join. I was personally in the Navy and was able to spend alot of time with the Marines as a result so thats the only real perspective I have. In my opinion the basic job of both the Army and the Marines is essentially the same. Navy is the same thing except on water. Air Force with jets (duh). You seem to want to join a National Guard unit which indicates to me that while you are wanting to improve your self esteem and serve your country you are not so wild about running around with people shooting at you all the time. If that is the case then I would go with the Air Force or the Air National Guard. Both do a wonderful job and you will gain skills beyond what you are expecting, however you will be able to do it without so many bullets coming your way. Same with the Navy, except well, you are on a ship and don't get to touch land very often. (Land! Land! Yes and shore leave has been cancelled...) Of course I could be totally wrong about your motivations, and if so then go for either the Army or the Marines or even the Army National Guard or any of them. All have a specific job they do, just depends on what you want to do.

You say you understand the risks involved so I won't try to preach to you about the current wartime strategies or anything like that. Just know that this is your decision and yours alone. All decisions bear a certain measure of responsibility in making them.

I hope this helps.

Hey I was the same way--I had low self esteem joined the Army, I became more outgoing and did things I never thought I could do. Not to mention I really loved the fact that my family was so proud of me. Also I met WAY cool people, I mean the friends you make in the military are way different then others because they have your back and will be with when the going gets tough

Not sure if the military will help your confidence however I would definitely go active duty as opposed to guard. This will enable you to change environments, make some cash, and basically get a whole new view of life. Hit me back if you want to talk about it more. Good Luck

i was in the same situation myself when i joined. i think if you get with someone who has been in awhile they can take you under their wing and guide you through your career. your army career will only be great if you want it to be. go to as many schools and classes as you can and nothing can hold your career back. you have to invest a lot of time into this so think about it.
