There's a lot of places you don't want to go in New York at night if you don't know anybody.

Bronx, Harlem, Spanish Harlem, Washington Heights, Queens Bridge, Bed/Sty in Brooklyn, Jamaica Queens, and there's like 20 more areas and tons of neighborhoods and projects.

But there's also tons of safe places in N.Y.C.

Well it is not so much about go no zones in any large city as it is go no times. I think after dark is when you see crime spike... there are many reason for this...more drinking at night, the ability to move around undetected, people seem to get more careless and walk around without a partner and the list goes on. So time is a big factor but sure the more bars and clubs the more chance of people failing to stay in control. It also seems that the more young people ....the more crime. Young people are often the victims of crime and also many find protection by being in gangs which themselves sometimes promote crime, and many younger people are more inclined to entertain and invite drug use or abuse alcohol - though this is not really age dependent.
So a lot of factors play into these zones you talk about but in general if there are a lot of people, and most are younger and some are in gangs and there are bars around and it is late at night ...it would not have to be New York City to tell you that this might not be a good TIME to be walking around alone.
BE SAFE.

All of NY has it's dangers. You just have to watch where you go and be on the lookout. If you stay in Manhattan or most of Brooklyn you should be ok.

The south Bronx. Most of Brooklyn except Bensonhurst. Nothing in Manhattan that I could think of. Maybe parts of the lower east side.

Yes...little parts here and there of every borough. I honestly don't like Brooklyn and have only gone there during the day. I don;t know if you meant NYC or NY state but I live in NYC and NY state and I feel safe pretty much wherever I go.
