My opinion is that cats who are outdoors beyond the owner's territory should be supervised by the owner. They shouldn't just be let out with a collar without walking with it, and expect it do come home safely. What do you think?

I totally agree with you. See, you and I are caring owners. Many arent. I personally dont let my cats out but I have put them on a harness and leash. They didnt like that very much but at least they were under my full control. Too many people let their cats out unsupervised and thats how they wind up dead or bring home fleas or other diseases.

I think all cats should be kept on leashes when outside, it would cut down on all the strays. My cat skittles was 4 yrs old when she became in/out door cat, that is when i trained her to a harness and leash, though it wasn't easy and it took some time. The hardest part was not letting her see the harness until i was slipping it on to her, if she did it took hours to get her out from behind the icebox amoungest other places. I have a neighbor who has a live cat trap which i don't have a problem with except he just dumps or kills the cats somewhere. I feel if he's going to catch the cats then he needs to take them someplace so the owners have the opportunity to claim them if they care too.

Absolutely. Cats kept as pets should not be allowed to free roam.. If the pet guardian wants the cat to enjoy the outdoors now and again then steps must be taken to ensure the cat's safety. There are a number of ways now that this can be done: train the cat to walk with halter and leash; build an big outdoor enclsure for them; put up cat-proof fences whose tops curve inward preventing the cat from jumping the fence; etc. I myself have leash-trained my two cats and also have a huge outdoor enclosure for them. Too many wonderful cats are rushed to emergency vets with terrible injuries from cat fights, animal bites, etc. not to mention the ever present danger of being run over by cars or picked up by psycho teenagers and tortured.

Outdoor cats do not live as long as indoor cats because of the dangers they encounter: automobiles, other animals, abusive people, chemicals, etc.

If you have an enclosed pen, it's OK to let the cat out unsupervised. But you still need to check up on it.

I walked my first cat on a harness and leash. She loved it. I will be doing the same for my current two cats. Using a harness and a leash is the best way to do it, I think.

I use cat fence-in in my backyard and my cats can be outside and not leave my property.

I have a neighbor next door who still thinks my cats go in his backyard and I can't convince him that none has ever been there. I just got a new cat and the neighbor saw it in the window. He ask, "Is he going to be an outside cat too?" He won't miss this one who is the White Ghost and if he saw it he would know it was mine. My other cats look like some of the ones here that are outside freely going from one garden to the other.

I agree with you. I used to have A cat that was trained to walk on A leash when he was out. A few years ago my daughter had A cat that ran out of the house and has not been seen since, That broke her hart.

I like your opinion. But unfortunately, it is never going to be a perfect world and other people will have a different opinion on whether or not their cat should be allowed to run the neighborhood. and most that do won't announce it.

yes i think they should because sadly i have seen many cats get run over by cars. it is really sad for those owners to have their pets out of their sight. too bad not many owners really care.
