No, it's true. That's why so many people don't WANT to quit. It's not JUST that you eat more when you quit. It's that your metabolism does slow down, and you gain an average of 7-8 lbs. Smoking is a stimulant which smokers take in 20 times a day (for a pack a day smoker). It's PROVEN! Even the smoking cessation programs will tell you this, because they HAD to address it when trying to get people to quit. Check the link below for the proof.
Even so, it's VERY stupid to start smoking in order to lose weight. You could end up losing more than just that. After all, lung cancer patients lose weight pretty rapidly.

No I don't believe it does speed up your metabolism, I may be wrong but they certainly don't speed up mine. What it does is speed up your heart rate, clog your arteries and a multitude of other things.. I know, I smoke. It's a rotten horrible addiction. What does speed up your metabolism is good ole fashion exercise. I am assuming she is a young person, if you can talk her into looking into the dangers of smoking maybe you can get her to quit before it consumes her life.. I try to quit all the time, but I have been smoking for about 20 years and it is very difficult. I wish I had someone care enough when I was young to help me realize what I was doing to my body with cigarettes. All the health issues were not brought up until many years after I had been smoking. The surgeon general put "Smoking may be hazardous to your health" on packs of cigarettes in my day.. Now with more knowledge it says They cause cancer. I will keep trying to quit and hope your friend does too. :) Sorry I didn't mean to lecture...It sounds like your friend is using cigarettes as a means for keeping weight off. The reason people gain weight when they quit smoking is that they simply don't know what to do with the time that they set aside for smoking so they eat.. Cigarettes really don't curb your appetite.. But eating will help curb your need for cigarettes. Hence, a whole new set of problems, weight gain. Your simply changing from one habit to another, Over eating..

While not every smoker gains weight after quitting, research suggests that most will put on 6 to 8 pounds; a minority will put on 30 pounds or more. Smoking suppresses the appetite and speeds up metabolism, and when a smoker gives up the habit, metabolism returns to normal, usually resulting in some weight gain.

Smoking doesn't speed up your metabolism. What it does do, is trick your brain and stomach into feeling full because of the chemicals in the cigarettes. It makes you not want to eat and that it why people claim it speeds up your metabolism. People who quit smoking gain weight usually for lack of the chemical telling their body they are full.

he is on drugs. smoking is BAD for your matabalism. Reasearch shows that the more you smoke your metabolism goes down, unless you are included with running, walking, and a lot of sports. That helps increase your metabolism if you smoke.

no it just keeps your mouth occupied. A lot of smokers gain weight initially after quitting but they don't realize that they are just sticking more food in their mouths instead of cigerettes. After that passes they actually start to return to their normal (healthy) weight.

No it doesn't, smoking gives diminishes the sensation of hunger. once you quit smoking you gain weight because you no longer have anything to dampen your sense of hunger.
