Terminal hairs only grow from the root, the rest of the hair is keratinized dead cells.
When cutting the hair at the end you prevent the split ends from continuing up the shaft, thus as the root produces more hair less of its length is lost to the splits.
Furthermore, as hair falls out at an average rate of 100 hairs per day, proper nutrition is needed to keep hairs in their place for sufficient time to maintain a meaningful length.

When you get the ends cut, you prevent split ends from starting and therefore, your hair keeps growing from the roots and doesn't get shorter from split ends because you are trimming the ends just a little every two or three weeks, this let's your hair grow longer and longer. To not trim the ends, you allow your hair to break off from having split ends and then when you get it cut it is even shorter.

Dead ends affect the hair's overall growth.
By cutting off the ends, which are all damaged, it makes it easier, and quicker for the healthy roots to grow through.

Dead-ends/split ends can damage and cause breakage to your hair. The damage will rise up the hair shaft. When you cut the ends, the damage isn't able to spread.

cutting the ends off just keeps it healthy because you don't want to get split-ends. If you get split-ends, your hair will grow very slowly because it will just turn into more and more split-ends.

I have always wondered this exact same thing. If you are interested in having your hair grow take a good multi-vitamin. It was recommended to me that I also take Kelp, you can find it at your local GNC.
