Well, Empress--it works like this: kitty was there first and just as soon as he/she has established that fact with the puppy that it's "Kitty's way or they Hi-way" all will be well. Cats are very territorial and she/he's only protecting his/her territory. You might expect a little spraying/"marking" of the house to take place. However, this is a much better situation than trying to introduce a new puppy into a home where there is already 1 or more cats. The dog will quickly learn who's boss and back off, whereas cats are very stubborn and headstrong and can actually terrorize a puppy. Just a little time and patience is all. If they are getting into fights too often, separate them--put one in another room & close the door and the next time around, confine the other one to a room. Good luck with your "dualing-duo", but in all honesty, just a little time and they will be fine.

Getting a dog and cat to get along takes time and patience. Cats and dogs speak different languages - for instance: to a cat, a friendly greeting is to walk slowly forward, staring at you, tail up in the air. In a dog, that type of greeting is considered very dominating and aggressive. Polite dogs look away and greet each other with a tail sniff. A dog initiates play by bowing down or lifting a paw - to a cat, those gestures are threatening. So, naturally, it takes time for cats & dogs to learn to understand each other. You can help things along, though - these articles explain the process:

It will take some time, but hopefully they will learn to get along. We had the opposite problem and introduced a kitten to an older dog. They started off hissing and slapping at each other, but eventually they became inseparable. The kitten started following the dog around and they even slept curled up together.

The kitten got to the point that he wanted to go out with the dog to do his business, but since he refused to wear a collar and a leash that never happened.

They adapt by themselves

Once they realize that both of them are staying in the house together, they'll learn.
One even might become the father/mother figure to the other, that's what happened to my friends cat and the new puppy they got, it's kind of funny.

It will depend on the cat. Cats who have had bad experiences with dogs (being chased, etc.) usually are not trusting of any dogs (puppies included) and unwilling to befriend dogs.
