doesnt really matter but i think they would like wooden better

Oh yes, it does matter. The parakeet prefers the wooden nest box , with a 1and 1/2 inch entrance hole. If the entrance hole is bigger , it allows too much light into the nest box. Put a small dowel just ouside the hole , so a male can sit on that perch to feed the hen, while she sits tight on her clutch(eggs). When we built our wooden nest boxes out of pine, my husband carved in the bottom of the box a nest bowl. He scoped out the wood and made the nest bowl about 1/2 inch deep. That way the eggs would stay under the hen. Do not use any nest bedding. Wood chips cause the eggs to dry out. The eggs need to absorb mositure from the hen and the wood chips absorb all the moisture, leaving the eggs, too dry. This cause poor egg hatching. The male needs to be in the cage with the hen, as he feeds her and every other day, he fertilizes the on coming egg.

Please, before starting to breed your birds, research proper breeding diet, age, conditions, and make sure that you have an avian vet nearby just in case there are any problems.

Be ready to handfeed if the parents reject the chicks. That will be every 1-2 hours in the beginning, day and night. If you feed the formula too hot, you will burn the chick's crops and that will kill them. If you feed it too cold, they will develop slow/sour crop and that can kill them. If you feed it too thick or too thin, you can asperate the chicks and that will either kill them by suffacation or by the pnumonia that will follow.

Breeding birds is not just a hobby, it is a full time job, please take at least 6 months and do your research, not only on the internet, but with books and breeders (in person.) After knowing everything that can happen and being prepared to do what is needed in any emergency, then if you still want to breed you will be fully educated and prepared.

This means, don't offer the nest box until you have done these things. When you get to that point, then you will know which nest box you want to choose, and the pros and cons of each one.

More then likely the eggs are not fertile. The mother bird may sit on them for a while but more then likely she will ignore them in a day or two and then you can remove them from the cage. I would not bother getting a nesting box unless you are sure you have a male and female parakeet and if you want to have young. Often times a female will lay eggs even without a male bird present.

Hey there. I prefer the wooden nest box with a hinged top for easy access. It's more natural since they nest in the hollows of trees. Good luck and have a tweet year.

They lay eggs better in wooden boxes. You can give them notebook paper or the one piece napkins and they tear them up themselves and put it in the nest. It may sound wierd but it's helpful to them to be comfortable in the box.

I had luck with a wooden box with my parakeets. They are easier for them to "chew" on and sharpen their beaks. More inconvenient for cleaning and germs, tho.
