Heating pad, go to the doctor and ask for and ex ray or an MRI , a physical therapist is good if you don't have a blown disc. I 've had worse problems when going to a Chiropractor he was good for the upper part of my back but the lower NO I wish you luck but it sounds like your in need of a good doctor. You can take it easy for a while lay on your side with a pillow between your knees. Don't pick up any thing that weighs over 5 to 10 lbs. No vacuuming or sweaping, or mopping, pulling on lawn mower cords, or mowing grass. Don't climb stairs. or hills. Use a heat rub and wash your hands in cold water when done, because warm makes it absorb in to your hands and can become a real tear jerker.

Though sciatica is a common problem, it is really surprising that often it is hard to tell why a person suffers from this ailment. This is why it is often referred to as a back pain complex. Even experienced doctors find it difficult to pinpoint a cause. Number of medical conditions lead to sciatica such as stress and trauma at any point on spinal cord or lower back. This is understandable but when a person feels this pain and the underlying causes are as general as obesity or pregnancy, it presents a vague picture to the doctor. There can be many more underlying causes that require supervision and treatment at the right time.

Check here a very effective sciatica natural treatment http://cure-sciatica.info
Normally, I would not answer a question like this as my expertise is generally in medication but I had severe sciatica while I was pregnant with my 3rd child (after having had twins) and I had sciatica so bad that I was finding it difficult to walk. I tried massage therapy and physical therapy and could not take medication
I went to the chiropractor and the pain was instantly relieved. My hips and lower back were out of alignment because I had carried twins the year before. On occasion a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) can also work but they usually only work on one joint at a time - the chiropractor will do your whole back which works faster. Anyone who does not believe in chiropractors will tell you they are quacks - don't listen.
I don't necessarily believe that chiropractors can cure things like diabetes but they can definitely relieve some types of back pain especially if a pinched nerve is involved which is usually the cause of sciatica.

had a similar problem myself, after a backpacking trip. i think it has to do with stressing a muscle, or possibly a disk in your spine. whatever it is puts pressure on your sciatic nerve, which causes pain in lower back, butt, down side/back of leg and sometimes all the way to the foot. people often think they've done something to their hamstring. Ibuprofen (anti-inflammation) helped relieve the pressure and take away the pain. spend some time stretching when you can. relax. there is an area that helps to massage--first, on the side that is painful, find the dimple in your back just above your butt. then move your finger over, away from the spine, a couple of inches. Now move it down an inch or so. Start massaging very deeply, and keep doing it in this area. Someone told me about this and it really helped relieve the pain for me. you should get better in about four or five hours once you start doing this. stay positive.

If you want to try something at home try Ibuprofen 200mg tablets taking up to 4 that makes it a prescription strengh. I have had this problem for about 10 years til I filally went to the doctor and now I take alot of pain and nerve meds. These are controlled substances and can become addictive so procede with caution and go to the doctor if the Ibuprofen doesn't help along with plenty of rest and hot baths with epsomsalts in it.

I had a neighbor who had that acute pain. Her father found an injection medicine, which she had it injected in her gluteus muscle. Only 6 injections helped her. It was a French medication, called DICLONAT. I don't know how he found it. I think it was the french equivalent of ibuprofen but in injections.
She also had some massage therapy on her leg, and that's all. She never had the pain back.
Another person tried it with physiotherapy, it didn't help at all. That was like electric excitation that worsened his condition.

I have had problems like that for years (12 1/2 years). I went to the doctor and had to have xrays done and discover that I have scoliosis (a minor case and right at the tail end of my spine). I was told that is why I have so many problems, because one hip is higher than the other, and made it more easy for the nerve to be pinched. Do lots of stretching. There is really nothing they will do for me. I hope you are feeling much better very soon.

I have had sciatica for years. for one, you should take an anti inflamatory such as ibuprofin or asprin on a regular basis until you see relief. also, did you know that sitting makes it worse? I was told that by my doc, and it is true. do some stretching, raise your arms up and stretch your entire body. stand still and let your head, neck and spine roll forward one vertibrae at a time. stand with your back against the wall, gradually slide down the wall, letting the wall hold your back with friction. the goal is to increase the space between the vertibrae. also, face a cair and put your armpits on the back, the lower yourself until you are held up by your arms, this stretches the back too.
