A Polish pilot is shot down and parachutes to safety, but is believed to be German by local farmers who lead him away at the point of a pitchfork. I have heard that this is partly based on a real incident but they actually murdered the pilot who could not speak English. Is this true?

Yes, it was true. It was based on real-life incidents in World War II. Most British civilians in the countrysides weren't aware that Polish and Czech pilots were flying RAF planes. So these pilots, whenever shot down were usually suspected as being enemy pilots, especially if they cannot speak English. It's a tragedy.

It is quite feasable. A number of shot down RAF pilots and crew were murdered by German civilians after some particularly devastating air raids.

No I do not belive that is true. (I hope not)
But I do know that a monkey swam ashore from a shipwreck in the north sea during the Napoleonic war and the people of Hertlypool thought it was a French spy.
They hung the poor thing and have been ridiculed ever since.
(sorry if that is spelt wrong)

Bearing in mind that the good folk of Hartlepool hanged a monkey which was washed up after a shipwreck as a French spy during napoleonic times, I think that it is highly likely. Scared people are stupid people.
