I use VLC. It supports all sorts of types of media, and has more codecs than I can shake a stick at.

What type of AVI file? Windows media player is fine for most anything but you may need to install a codec for Divx or Xvid file types.

Get DivX player... it also has the new drivers for media player... I had the same problem a few days ago
