My Golden Retriever is very "put out" with the new Cocker Spaniel puppy. He did the same thing with my 3 yr old Shih Tzu when it was a puppy, but that only lasted 2 weeks. I've had my Cocker Spaniel puppy for 2 months. Help! I'm afraid that the Golden will hurt the puppy.

Think about who has been number one in your life for 5 years or at least number one for your Golden. Jealousy is a factor in this and the Golden wants to stay the dominant one of the two. Introduce them slowly and watch for any agression and take the pup away a bit at that point so it does not get hurt but keep on trying several times a day and it will work out when the Golden gets the message that it will be loved just as much and have the added joy of a companion too. Just take it slow and easy and let them get to know one another slowly.

Our 2 year old Cocker Spaniel HATED our great dane pup but we just kept putting them together and let him do the barking and growling. We would play with and pet both of them. After some time, they finally got along... now they are BEST friends! Don't be afraid to let the older one "be mean" to the younger one because it is just trying to show it's dominance. In the wild they would be biting and full out fighting so as long as the older one is not hurting the younger, it should be okay. This is natural.

You cant make animals like eachother. The only thing you can do is love them both and hope they will like eachother. If you love them both then eventually they will both warm up to eachother and usually love eachother.
