OK you can saute the onions in the butter mix it in with the potatoes . Mix in some garlic powder maybe 1/2 teaspoon and some cheese . Put the potatoes in a baking dish add the rest of the cheese on top . Heat oven to 300 put in for 5-10 minutes until cheese is melted . You could also add some crushed up corn flakes on top to if you wanted . Good luck .

hope that you like it
ps; old bay taste really great witht this .

you have all the ingredients for good potatoes
use milk instead of water and the butter.
cut up onion real fine, saute in skillet with additional butter till
soft.
add to potatoes/then stir in the cheese.
i bake the mashed potatoes . i spray cooking pan/dish with cooking
spray .or use butter . bake at 325-350 till the top is brown.

hmm...
Definitely throw in some milk and butter to give it more of that creamy flavor. I would suggest staying away from the onion though. Unless you really love onions, but I wouldn't put them in there raw...cook the onions in a skillet first then chop them up and mix them in...although it might look sort of weird....
If you have any garlic gloves, I'd throw them in a pan with a little olive oil and then mix those up with mashed potatoes...
Grate some cheddar cheese and chop up some chives or green onions, and sprinkle them ontop!

Saute slices or chunks of onion (& garlic) in butter/oil and stir them into the taters.
Make a little indentation w the back of a spoon & fill with peas & a dollop of sour cream - like a bird's nest.
Add coooked mashed carrots to the mashed taters.
Herbed cream cheese or chives.
Pesto sauce.
(As mentioned) grated/shredded cheese.
Spinach.
Marinated artichokes.
Bacon bits.

Add all of that! Cook the onions in a little butter to get them softened. Add that along with the cheese.
